HAIDUK runs on a modified Year Zero Engine by Free League Publishing, specifically the dice pool variant. Six-sided dice (D6s) are used in the game, all rules are built on top. The core resolution mechanic of the game is a check. The GM calls for one when:
- the outcome of a player character’s action is uncertain,
- the action is performed under significant stress, time or material constraint,
- failure carries significant risk or cost.
The player then rolls a number of dice equal to their character’s points in the relevant attribute and skill. Rolls of 6 are considered a success. More than one success means additional damage or a situational benefit. In group efforts, the player whose character has the highest relevant skill rolls.
Player characters can help each other, adding a die to the roll for every assistant that meaningfully contributes. Two characters can also have mutually exclusive goals leading to an opposed roll. Successes cancel each other but ties are detrimental to both sides. Checks can be modified by +/-1 to +/-3, in uncommon, rare, and extreme circumstances. That many dice are added or subtracted from the roll.
NPCs and Entities that are actively opposing the player character’s action modify the check. The modifier depends on their stats.
Finally, if a check fails or the player wants additional successes, they can push the roll. They get to re-roll any dice that don’t show the result of 1. All dice count after the push!
